How many vedas are there?

Veda is eternal knowledge, but when we talk about the vedas, we mean the four vedas. The four vedas are Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda and Atharvaveda. Rig veda comes first in the list of the vedas.

Mantras in the vedas

There are total 20379 mantras in the vedas. There are 10552 mantras in Rigveda, 1975 in Yajurveda, 1875 in Samveda, and 5977 in Atharvaveda with a total of 20379 mantras in all the Vedas.

The Rig veda

Rigveda is One of the four vedas and is Oldest of the four vedas. Why it is called the rigveda ? Rig veda is called so because it consist of mantras called ‘Riks’ which correctly describe the properties, action and nature of all things.
Rigveda surely is the giver of the true knowledge of all objects. As it is said that all things from god down to earth are extolled by the mantras of the Rigveda, the learned people should study the Rigveda. Clearly grasping the sense of the verses and correctly understanding the attributes of all things should then make up their minds to accomplish the good of all creatures.
