To understand the Vedas, the study of six Vedangas is necessary: [i] Shiksha (~ letters, pronunciation and their significance), [ii] Kalpa (~ rites, conduct, etc.), [iii] Vyakran or Grammar, [iv] Nirukta ( ~ etymology), [v] Chandas or prosody, and [vi] Jyotish or astrology (~mathematics and astronomy).
