Translation >
Those men who study all the sciences and teach others and are or have been the ones who do good to all with their teachings are taken by the word Purva, and those who study now and practice to acquire knowledge are taken by the word Nautana, because those who know the meanings of mantras, propagate religion and knowledge, bestow kindness on all with their true teachings, are honest hard-workers, worship God for the success of religion and those who, after knowing the qualities of physical fire for the success of works, are successful in their actions, all those fully learned people with auspicious qualities are called Rishis, and those who are living in the world of reason and action, who are proved by logic and evidence to know the principles of ancient and new scholars, [they are also taken by the word Rishi]. God is worthy of praise from all these and physical fire is worthy of search with its respective qualities. And the omniscient God has shown the two knowledges of Paramartha and Vyavahara in this mantra by knowing the past and the present i.e. the sages of the three times with his omniscience, hence there can be no fault in saying things of the past or the future in this, because the Vedas are the words of the omniscient God. That God is the giver of the best of the best things of enjoyment combined with the best qualities and the physical fire in practical activities. One thing is newer than the old and the first is old than the new. See, the Niruktaakar has also given the same meaning to this mantra that- the meaning that the natural people i.e. the ignorant people have taken in the famous physical fire making etc., should not be taken in this mantra, but the God who gives light to all and the cause of all knowledge, whose name is vidyut, the same physical fire has been called here by the word Agni. (Agni: Poorve) The meaning of this mantra has been changed by the new commentators, like Sayanacharya has written that- (Puratanai:) It is appropriate for the ancient Bhrigu, Angira etc. and the new ones i.e. us to praise Agni. He delivers the offerings to the gods for them to eat. The new people of Europe and Aryavart have given such an explanation in English language, and it is still given in imaginary texts. So it is a matter of great surprise that such an explanation of the eternal Veda revealed by God, whose trivial meaning is against the true texts like Nirukta Shatpath, how can it be true. ॥2॥
